How to Actually Increase Post Visibility on X - Without Playing the Algorithm’s Game

Let’s cut through the fluff.
Every social media “expert” out there wants to sell you a new tool, a shiny content calendar, or some vague “authenticity” tip that’s about as helpful as a screen door on a submarine.
You want to increase your visibility on X? Good. You’re in the right place. Because I’m not here to whisper sweet nothings about engagement rates and sprinkle fairy dust on your follower count.
I’m going to walk you through how to actually get seen - and how most brands are screwing it up.
THE CORE TRUTH: X REWARDS ACTIVITY, NOT PERFECTION
This ain’t LinkedIn. You don’t need polished carousels, AI headshots, or a bio that reads like a TED Talk.
X wants friction. Raw thoughts. Hot takes. Threads that read like a rant. The algorithm favors presence over perfection.
If you’re posting once a week and wondering why no one’s seeing your stuff? That’s your answer.
Post every day. Minimum. Multiple times if you can. But - and here’s the kicker - it has to be good.
Let’s talk about how.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING (BUT NOT IN THE WAY YOU THINK)
You’ve probably heard the advice: “Post when your audience is online.”
Sure. Makes sense.
But here’s what they don’t tell you: what matters more than time is momentum.
If your post picks up engagement in the first 10–20 minutes, it gets pushed. If it doesn’t, it dies. Period.
So yes - use your analytics. Post when folks are active. But focus on triggering interaction early.
That means strong hooks, CTA-driven tweets, and sometimes… calling people out.
Want to boost early engagement? Text three people and tell them to comment. Email your list. Pin the tweet. Quote yourself. This is war, not etiquette.
YOUR CONTENT IS TOO SOFT
Let’s be real: your content probably sounds like it was written by ChatGPT’s shy cousin.
Polished. Safe. Corporate.
Nobody shares safe. Nobody bookmarks boring.
Here’s what X loves:
• Contrarian takes
• Storytelling with grit
• “You’re doing it wrong” rants
• Step-by-step mini-guides that actually help
• Real vulnerability - paired with strategy, not just therapy dumps
Drop the fluff. Speak like a person. Better yet, speak like someone who’s got something to say.
THREADS STILL WORK - IF YOU’RE NOT BASIC
Threads aren’t dead. Bad threads are.
If your thread starts with “Here’s a thread on social media tips 🧵,” stop. Delete. Go outside. Start over.
Here’s how to write threads that get traction:
• Hook people in tweet 1 like it’s a Netflix trailer
• Break each idea down like you’re teaching a 5th grader
• Keep it punchy: no paragraph tweets
• End with a question or CTA
• Add a visual or stat in the middle to stop the scroll
Bonus points if you repurpose your blog posts into threads (which, by the way, I do every week).
VISUALS MATTER (EVEN ON X)
Yes, it’s still a text-driven platform.
But guess what stops the scroll? A clean graph. A spicy meme. A B&W photo with a line that hits.
If you’re not adding visuals 1 out of every 4 posts, you’re missing out.
Also: templates suck. Your Canva carousel? Nobody cares. Give me a meme with context over another pastel LinkedIn screenshot any day.
YOU’RE NOT ENGAGING ENOUGH (OR YOU’RE ENGAGING WRONG)
Replying to Elon Musk isn’t engagement. It’s shouting into the void.
Here’s how to actually grow:
• Pick 5–10 accounts in your niche
• Reply to their stuff every day
• Not “great post!” - real takes, thoughtful comments, challenges, additions
• Quote-tweet them when you’ve got something to add
Your replies are your preview. They show people who you are. Most of my followers didn’t find me from my tweets - they found me from my comments.
Engagement isn’t a favor. It’s strategy.
STOP OVERLOADING HASHTAGS
One or two niche-specific hashtags? Cool.
Six hashtags per post like it’s 2014 Instagram? No. You look desperate.
Here’s the move:
• Use one broad (like #marketing)
• One niche (like #outdoorbrands or #CPGgrowth)
• Sometimes none, just clean copy with a killer hook
CONSISTENCY TRUMPS VIRALITY
This is the truth no one wants to hear.
You don’t need 100k followers. You need 1,000 people who care what you say.
You get that by showing up daily, even when it feels like no one’s watching.
You build momentum, not by going viral once, but by becoming undeniable over time.
BONUS: PLATFORM-SPECIFIC MOVES
If you’re in food & bev or outdoor lifestyle - two of my core zones - this part’s for you.
Food & Bev: Post ingredient callouts. Post sourcing stories. Memes about Whole Foods. Hot takes on “clean label” greenwashing. Anything that builds trust.
Outdoor Lifestyle: Use weather. Use maps. Use real photos. The more it feels like dirt-under-your-nails and less like stock footage, the better. Post like your campfire’s dying and this is the last story you get to tell.
CLOSING THOUGHT
If your brand’s strategy on X is “post more and hope,” you’re already losing.
You don’t need hope. You need hooks, consistency, and a little edge.
Don’t post like a corporation. Post like someone worth following.
